Whoever wants to be able to improve or repair things around the house himself or herself must have tools appropriate for the job. There are cutting tools, tools for measuring and marking, for fastening and joining, for applying and for dismantling. A toolbox should have them all, but here we will discuss the fastening and joining tools.
A hammer is a basic tool for your toolbox. A 16-ounce claw hammer is appropriate for common repairs and improvements. The curved claw will be used for pulling out nails that haven't been placed correctly. If the hammer feels too heavy for you, a 12-ounce one is an option too, but an even lighter one will only be useful in a few very simple tasks. A framer hammer has a longer hex nut with hole suppliers and is used for nailing above one's head or in difficult angles. When you need to be careful with the area around the nail, you should use a rubber mallet instead of a metal head hammer. There is also the option of using nail sets in such cases: the nail set will stand in between the nail head and the hammer.
Where screwdrivers are concerned, there are two basic types: the standard one, whose shank has a flat tip reminding of the minus sign, appropriate for single-slot screws, and the Phillips screwdriver whose shank tip reminds you of the plus sign, appropriate for Philips head screws. The shanks may be long, so that you can reach far into narrow spaces, or short and stumpy allowing you to have more turning power. There are different point sizes that screwdrivers are available in.
